The Wanderers’ coach claimed it was “our best performance of the season” as they picked up a bonus-point and inflicted a huge psychological blow on the Squirrels, who still have three games in hand over the table-toppers.
“It was a massive team performance and it just goes to show what we can achieve when we all pull together. It’s impossible to single out players from the best performance of the season so far,” said Fish.
The two teams will meet again at the Memorial Ground on 30 March and if the Wanderers can complete the double then they could well be on their way to the title.
The top-of-the-table clash was switched from Rhiwbina’s Caedelyn Park home to the all-weather pitch at Llanishen and the home side moved into a 6-0 lead thanks to two early penalties from Lewis Pearce. It was the only time they would lead in the match as the Wanderers came storming back.
Rob Weston drove into the heart of the Squirrels defence to send Phil Pariyo over in the corner and Luke Fish added the conversion. Ioan Lewis then went over for a second Wanderers try at the posts, which Fish again improved, before a third Pearce penalty made it 14-9 at the break.
The Wanderers then pressed home their advantage in the second half with three more tries, two for Josh Male and one for Max Cunnington. Fish converted all three to complete a big win in every sense.
The other scheduled game last week, between Treorchy and Mountain Ash, was postponed because of the weather. The Zebras have three games to make up on a number of the teams above them and are also into the semi-fianls of the Mid District Cup and the WRU National Plate.
