The battle to avoid relegation from the WRU National Championship took another twist at the weekend with Maesteg Quins moving out of the drop zone with a crucial 28-16 victory over basement boys Newcastle Emlyn.

It was their four win in their last six league outings and, with four clubs dropping through the trap door at the end of the season, their latest maximum points victory has moved them into mid-table.

Dean Ronan, Andrew Healy, Aled Edwards and Alex Griffiths all crossed for tries, while the reliable Tadgh McGuckin kicked the rest of their points. The win leaves Quins in a healthy position as they are now a point above the drop zone with games in hand on all of their rivals.

Rhydyfelin are also in trouble as they are now six points adrift following their 28-13 defeat to Tata Steel. Newbridge also lost some ground in the race for survival after a narrow 20-17 defeat to fellow relegation-threatened Beddau, who sit just one place outside the bottom four.

Eamonn Rees converted both tries from Luke Morgan and Toby Twigg as well as notching a penalty as Newbridge looked to bounce back from defeat last time out against Tata Steel. But Hywel Chatham matched Rees’ efforts following tries from Ethan Coombes and Adam Ashford.

A draw was on the cards until a last-gasp penalty was awarded to Beddau and Chatham stepped up to snatch the victory. At the other end of the table, Ystrad Rhondda and Cardiff Met both failed to capitalise on Pontypool’s absence.

Cardiff Met dropped down to fourth with Liam Roberts, Rhys Davies, Gareth Williams and Sam Farrar-Evans earning mid-table Bedlinog a 26-15 bonus-point win. Ben Grzesica was on hand to fire over two conversions while Rhys Walker added a third. Jay Tucker, Corey Whane, George Gladding hit back for the Archers but they couldn’t prevent defeat.

And Ystrad Rhondda suffered the same fate as they fell to a 19-7 to Narberth, who moved into second place, 10 points behind leaders Pontypool.
