Bonymaen celebrate their semi-final win over Treorchy

Bonymaen displayed their true fighting spirit to hit back from a 14 point interval deficit to notch what team manager Dai Allen claimed was “the best win in the club’s history” to pip Treorchy 28-19 to a place in the WRU National Plate Final.

Everything was going swimmingly for the Zebras when they changed ends with tries from Jacob Lloyd and Peter Hutchings, both of which Jordan Lloyd converted, in the bag. But a big second half from Bony ensured a dramatic turn-around in fortunes at Glynneath’s Abernant Park.

“I would say it’s definitely the biggest win in our history. The club has never been this far and we don’t know if and when it’s going to happen again,” said a delighted Allen.

“It was a bit of a shock to be 14-0 down at half-time. Treorchy came out and played some good attacking rugby and were running the ball from anywhere.

“It just didn’t happen for whatever reason in the first-half and we made a lot of errors that allowed them into the game. But the coaches had a few choice words to say at half-time and we came out a different team in the second half.

“I think as we came back into it the crowd were getting excited and the boys were feeding off that. It really helped them through at the end and the boys in this team have just forgotten how to lose at the moment.”

Two tries from Sam Jones and one from Chris Moore led the second half revival. Richard Cunniffe added two conversions and a penalty, while Lawrence Thomas sent over a penalty and a drop goal.

Treorchy responded with a Cal Phillips try after the scores had been tied at 14-14, but once again they weren’t able to hang onto their lead. The reward for Bonymaen is a final showdown on Sunday, 28 April with undefeated Brecon.

“We took three coaches with us to Glynneath, as well as people travelling in cars. We took over Glynneath a bit with our support,” added Allen.

“You could really see what it means to everybody after the game when everybody was on the pitch with the players. There’s a really good atmosphere, it’s a real community.

“The boys have worked hard right from pre-season and it has all come to this now. We’ve still got the league going on as well and it’s all looking good.”
