Rhydyfelin run out of time in battle for Championship survival

Dai Gratton

Dai Gratton was Rhydyfelin's only try scorer

Rhydyfelin became the second team of four to be relegated from the WRU National Championship this season when they were beaten 16-7 at home by Trebanos.

It means they will join Newbridge in playing Division 1 rugby next season, while Maesteg Quins and Newcastle Emlyn are still fighting for their lives to overhaul Bedlinog in eighth place. Bedlinog were beaten 38-21 as they completed their season by becoming the 18 successive victim of the campaign for the champions Pontypool.

Rhydyfelin needed a positive result against Trebanos, who started the day just one place and one point above the drop zone. Dai Gratton crashed over for the Village’s only try with Ross Lucas adding the conversion, but that wasn’t even enough for a losing bonus point as Evan Budge and Cellan Michael both touched down for Trebanos.

Kristian Jones added a penalty while Lewis Humphries sealed the result fkr the visitors with a well-taken drop goal. The defeat leaves Rhydyfelin rooted to the bottom of the table, 10 points adrift of safety with just two games left to play – and one of those is at Pontypool Park.

Another big game in the battle for survival saw Newcastle Emlyn shock Maesteg Quins with a bonus-point 28-12 victory. Emlyn had won just five games all season and could have been relegated if they had lost but they rallied together to keep their slim hopes of staying up alive.

Lewis Jonathan, Emrys Davies, Dan Davies and Dafydd Evans all went over to keep Emlyn in the fight to stay up. Dan Davies delivered all four conversions to seal the triumph.

Quins, who are also in the drop zone, scored through Mathew Tidball and Aled Evans with Lewis Rowan adding a conversion. Emlyn’s route to safety is still complicated as they need maximum points from their final two fixtures against Tata Steel and Trebanos.

On top of that, they also need Beddau, Trebanos and Bedlinog to remain pointless in their final encounters. Meanwhile, Quins still have survival in their hands with four games left to overhaul a seven-point gap.

Brendan Lampitt, Joel Mahoney, Michael Herbert, Lewis Prothero, Ben Parry and Rhodri Usher were all on the scoresheet for Pontypool as they kept their unbeaten run going. Bedlinog showed flashes of talent with Dan Parry, David Parry and Dylan Williams all going over.
