The 27-year-old flanker learned his rugby at Brecon before switching to The Wern. He has been on the whole journey with Merthyr since they moved from Division 1 to the top tier and won everything on their way.
Having won the Division 1 East title and the WRU National Plate at the end of the 2013-14 season they marched to the top of the WRU National Championship in the space of two seasons to secure their ticket to the top flight with another title in 2016.
Since then they have won back-to-back Principality Premierships and last year completed the double by winning the WRU National Cup for the first time. Prop Louis Jones was in the matchday 23 with Davies that beat Rhiwbina in the Plate final five years ago and now they are seeking more silverware.
“I’ve been on the Merthyr journey all the way back when we won the Plate five years ago against Rhiwbina. It was a close game and a great day out,” recalled Davies.
“They were a good group of boys and a many of them came through like me. Some have gone wandering, but it’s been nice having a few who have stuck with it all the way through.
“I was with Brecon to begin with and I guess it could have been a case of drawing straws to see which team I could have been playing for this weekend. I just hope I get a Merthyr and Brecon double.
“It has been a roller-coaster ride with Merthyr, although there have been mainly highs. We are a progressive team and we have been in the top four all the way through the Championship and the Premiership.
“I’ve got a few medals to look back on and there aren’t too many people who can say they’ve done the double. I can say I’ve done it twice – once in Division 1 and then in the Premiership.
“Now we are aiming for a third one. But Cardiff are no mugs, they are playing great rugby, so it is going to be a tough game.
“I had a little dabble with the Cardiff Blues Premiership Select team a few seasons ago and I really wanted to try to make the step up. But I didn’t get the nod and I’m happy where I am.”
When he is not causing mayhem on the rugby field, Davies is a contract fencer who helps out on the family farm. That is where so much of his natural strength comes from.
“The family have got their own mini-bus to come down from Brecon to watch the final. It’s going to be a big day out,” added Davies.
