The visitors’ took firm control from the start and they secured the bonus-point before the break as they headed into the interval with a 26-12 lead. They kicked-on from there and added two more tries in the second half.
Now it is over to Bridgend on Wednesday night to see what they can do. A win at the Brewery Field would take them ahead of both Bedwas and Llanelli before they head to Aberavon and Pontypridd to finish their season.
Only a second win in 16 attempts at the Talbot Athletic Ground means Bedwas are now a point behind Llanelli and two points clear of Bridgend, who beat Bargoed 29-0. The problem for Bedwas, currently sitting in the play-off place and viewing a clash with Pontypool for the final place in next season’s Premiership, is that Bridgend have two games in hand.
Bedwas host Swansea on Saturday, while Llanelli welcome bottom of the table Neath at Parc y Scarlets. They are still alive, but even a bonus point win at the weekend might not be enough to stave off relegation.
Wales U20 wing Deon Smith gave Bedwas the lead with a fourth minute try and Joe Scrivens kicked the first of his four conversions to go through the 200 points mark for the season. Fellow wing Jordan Rees crossed twice in the first-half and lock Gareth Allen got the bonus point score.
Lee Purnell and Ieuan Davies powered over from close range for the home side and they picked up a penalty try in the second half. But Bedwas were in no mood to be denied and added further tries from Alun Rees and Adam Williams.
Pontypridd secured a hard-fought victory over RGC1404 in awful conditions at the Zip World Stadium in Colwyn Bay. Tries from Rob Jones and Alex Webber, as well as eight points from the boot of outside-half Ceri Sweeney, were enough to get Justin Burnell’s side over the line.
Mark Jones’ side scored two tries of their own courtesy of Nick Butterworth and Afon Bagshaw with Billy McBryde kicking four points.
“It was a hard-fought game and we’re pleased to come out on top. We showed a lot of endeavour, had to work hard to get the result and I thought our pack were excellent,” said Burnell.
In a game played in awful conditions it was the home side who opened the scoring when scrum-half Butterworth dummied at the base of the ruck before running in for a try which McBryde converted. But the visitors levelled the scores when Jones touched down after a powerful driving lineout with Sweeney converting.
Pontypridd crossed for their second try soon after when Alex Webber went over at the far right-hand corner after some slick handling from his inside backs. RGC dragged themselves back into the game with former Wales U20 full back Bagshaw going over at the stroke of half-time to give the Gogs a 14-12 lead.
The visitors were on top in the early stages of the second-half and began to build pressure in the RGC 22 forcing openside Will Bryan to the sin bin for cynically killing the ball at the breakdown. Former Wales outside-half Sweeney landed two penalties to secure the win.
Ebbw Vale notched 11 tries in their 74-7 swamping of Neath at Eugene Cross Park, Dawid Rubasniak grabbing a hat-trick, while Bridgend’s bid for Premiership survival remains very much in their own hands after their bonus-point win at Bargoed.
Lock Ben Jones scored twice while giant Moldovan prop Ghorghe Gajion and replacement Stuart Floyd-Ellis also scored in their 29-0 win at Bargoed. Owen Howe kicked the other nine points.
