Fish also added the conversion to take his personal tally to 18 points on a day that Brecon, the WRU National Plate and Division 1 East champions, thought they were going to take a handy lead with them to the Welsh capital having led 28-16 as the clock ticked past 80 minutes.
“Both teams can be excused for being a little bit cagy because there is a lot at stake. I’d imagine we may see a lot more rugby played next week,” said Wanderers director of rugby, Martyn Fowler.
“It’s half time and we a 5-0 down with all to play for. We also had a few players unavailable for the game at Brecon who will come into contention for the return leg, so all in all we are still very positive.”
Jake Crockett, who scored a hat-trick in Brecon’s Plate final triumph over Bonymaen at Principality Stadium at the end of last month, rose to the big occasion once again with two tries. Eifion Jones also crossed the Wanderers line, while Dean Gunter added two conversions and three penalties.
But the Wanderers’ greater fitness allowed them to stay in the fight and Fish matched Gunter off the kicking-tee and also added his last gasp try to go alongside and earlier effort from Cameron Gibbon.
