The WRU has increased its UKAD Educator network

All players registered with rugby union clubs in Wales have been strongly reminded of the need to stay onside anti-doping rules and keep rugby clean following the four year ban of a player after an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV).
Todd James tested positive for the presence of the prohibited substance ostarine following an in-competition test, after playing for Cross Keys against Pontypridd on 27 October 2018.

The Welsh Rugby Union, in partnership with Sport Wales, recently increased its network of UKAD educators to 15 [CLICK HERE FOR FULL STORY]. In addition to these individuals delivering anti-doping education to clubs and international and regional age grade teams around Wales, there is now an increased provision of workshops to Club Integrity Officers to support them as they educate their senior and youth team players.

WRU Head of Rugby Operations Julie Paterson said, “We strongly urge players to take heed of the education available and lengthy suspensions received by players who breach the rules. We want players to make good decisions both on and off the field, and the information is freely available for players to make these decisions. We are committed to our anti-doping education and awareness programmes, we’ve increased our efforts to train a network of UKAD educators, advisors and club integrity officers to ensure players, coaches and athlete support personnel are well-informed on the anti-doping rules in place including areas such as supplements and medications and are fully aware of their responsibility in the matter.

“We hope that these measures, and the lengthy bans received by players who violate the rules, whether deliberately or inadvertently and whether they take performance-enhancing or recreational substances, will reduce the risk of long-term bans which damage players’ on and off-field careers and the reputation of all involved, not to mention the general health of players.”
