He fed inside to flanker Ioan McDougle who then sent back row colleague Gwilym Evans racing the length of the 22 for the opening try. Josh Phillips banged over the conversion and his mighty right boot played a big part in proceedings.
The outside half then stretched the lead to 10 points with a simple penalty before Gwent replied with an eight phase forward drive from 15 metres out that ended with flanker Kyle Bailey bagging their first try.
Joe Westwood added the extras, but couldn’t improve a second try from the forwards six minutes later when back row man Sam Scarfe went over from a driving line-out. That score edged the visitors into the lead for the first time, but a second penalty from Phillips just before the break meant they were behind again going into half-time.
A third penalty shot from Phillips two minutes into the second half took Glantaf four points clear and a fourth success made it 19-12. The Gwent revival was led by hooker and captain Connor Chapman and Westwood’s conversion levelled things up with 14 minutes to go.
Phillips then took his match tally to an impressive 17 with his fifth penalty to grab the lead for Glantaf for the third time in the match, but Gwent were in no mood to surrender. Two strong runs from flanker Sam Scarfe and replacement centre Dylan Edwards before replacement prop Jack Powell came thundering onto a pass from his scrum half at a ruck on the home line and nobody was going to stop him from there.
Westwood’s simple conversion from in front of the posts made it 24-22 to his side and Gwent finished with a flourish as Chapman converted another driving line-out into a fifth try. Westwood converted and it the visitors were able to leave Sardis Road with a full house of points.
Reigning champions Coleg Y Cymoedd ran in seven tries in their45-5 home win over Neath Port Talbot College, with two of them coming in the opening three minutes from Rhys Dauncey and Macauley Rowley. Four more flowed as the score rose to 40-0 before Jordan Evans got one back for the visitors.
Gower College raced into a 20 point lead with three tries on their way to a 35-14 home win over Pembrokeshire College. Two of them came from right wing Tristan James, while No 8 Evand Sheldon and lock Caleb Salmon got two back for the visitors.
Cardiff & Vale College fell behind to a Joe McCarthy penalty at Whitchurch HS, but hit their hosts with a four try salvo to take complete control of the Blues derby clash as they bounced back from their opening round defeat to Cymoedd with a 33-17 triumph.
Dan Stancome, Will O’Connor, Harri Williams and Iestyn Galton crossed for the visitors and Cieran Anderson added a fifth at the death. Whitchurch replied with tries from Will Jameson and Jay Higgins.
There were also five tries for Coleg Llandrillo in their 35-17 win at Newport HS. Aaron Williams, Dafydd Williams, Cai Herdman, James Owen and Siencyn Metcalfe crossed for the visitors and Dafydd Williams converted them all.
