Pontypool continue relentless march towards Premiership

Pontypool

Pontypool have Bargoed and Bedwas hot on their heels at the top

There is simply no stopping Pontypool in their quest to regain their Premiership status, a 60-10 win over Trebanos making it the perfect start to the season for the champions.

They ran in 10 tries to make it five bonus-point wins in a row in the Specsavers National Championship. Leighton Jones’ men once again had it the bag by the break thanks to first half tries from Lewis Ball, Pat Lewis, Marcus Jones, Martin Luckwell and Brendan Lampitt.

Matthew Lewis kicked two conversions for a 29-10 interval lead. Josh Ferriman replied with a try for Trebanos and Richard Brunton added a conversion and penalty.

Five more tries followed for Pooler after the re-start as Rhys Clarke, Adam Stratton (2), Luckwell again and Kieran Meek crossed the Trebanos line. Lewis kicked two more conversions with Meek adding the extras to his own try.

Pooler are two points clear of Bedwas, who maintained their own 100 per cent winning start by seeing off Narberth 38-13 at the Bridge Field. First half tries from James Hallett and Mike Dacey helped the Wass into a 13-8 lead at the turnaround with three more points from the boot of Hallett.

Jordan Rees, Bryn Toms, Craig Hudd and Owain Keane crashed over in the second half with Dion McIntosh adding a penalty and conversion. Yannic Parker scored twice in reply for the Otters.

Also unbeaten are Bargoed, who made it four wins from five and are now three points back in third place following their convincing 46-7 win over Cross Keys. A Rhys Buckley hat-trick, two from Grant Rogers and further tries from Adam Powell and Rhys Morgan saw them through to another big win.

The only other unbeaten side, Cardiff Met, enjoyed a 20-16 win over Neath. Jack Silvestre and Morgan Nelson were the students’ try scorers with the other points coming from the boot of James Mattin, while Luke Griffiths scored all of Neath’s points, converting his own try and also banging over three penalties.

Newly promoted Ystalyfera, like Cross Keys, have now lost all five of their opening matches, but did at least earn a losing bonus point as they went down 16-12 at Maesteg Quins. Tadgh McGuckin kicked three penalties and a conversion to Jay Ronan’s try for the Quins, while there were four penalties for the visitors – two from player coach Gareth James and one each from Steff Castle and Jon Bayliss.

Two tries from skipper Aaron Fowler inspired Glamorgan Wanderers’ 23-3 home win over Beddau. Paul Short booted the rest with Hywel Chatham’s penalty scant consolation for the visitors.
Tata Steel were 26-17 home victors over Ystrad Rhondda.
