Unstoppable Lewis powers Pooler juggernaut on

Pontypool

Pontypool racked up in excess of 50 points for the fourth game in a row

There is simply no stopping, nor slowing down, the Pontypool juggernaut  and another 50+ point display made it 53 wins in a row in the Specsavers Championship at the weekend.

Leighton Jones’ three-time defending champions powered to a sixth bonus-point win out of six  as they inflicted a crushing 54-7 defeat on last season’s runners-up Ystrad Rhondda in their own backyard.

It was the fourth match in a row that Pooler had racked up 50 or more points and their latest triumph was inspired by a hat-trick from Lloyd Lewis – two in the first half and one in the second.

The bonus point was in the bag by half time at Gelligaled Park with Jordan Thomas, Kieran Meek and Clayton Gullis also dotting down. Meek added four conversions for a 33-0 interval lead. Thomas and Meek both went over again after the break before Lewis completed the job.

Bedwas’ scheduled match at Trebanos was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and that allowed another unbeaten team, Bargoed, to go above them into second place. That is after the Bulls powered their way to a 53-7 win at Beddau.

Rhys Humphries helped himself to a hat-trick while Rhys Buckley, James Leadbeater, Barney Nightingale, Ali Gardner-Key and Jordan Purcell also had their scoring boots on. Steffan Jones kicked four conversions and a penalty with Callum Jones also adding a conversion.

However Cardiff Met’s unbeaten league run is over as they crashed 52-5 at Narberth. Lewys Gibby ran in a hat-trick while also on the scoresheet were Nick Gale, Roy Osborn, Elliot Dawe, Josh Davies and Jake Jenkins. Gale added the rest from the kicking tee.

Elsewhere, Cross Keys’ ended a 17 match losing sequence of league matches as they edged Tata Steel 27-24 at Pandy Park. Kieran Hill, Adam Tetley and Lewis Allwood scored the tries for Keys with Hill kicking the rest to secure a first league win since 19 January – when they beat Bargoed 18-17 in the Premiership.

Ystalyfera are also up and running, as they beat Glamorgan Wanderers 26-22. Jon Bayliss and Owain Morgan grabbed the tries, both converted by Steff Castle who also kicked four penalties.

Meanwhile, a try brace from Andrew Healey and one from Alex Griffiths helped Maesteg Quins win 31-13 at Neath. Tadgh McGuckin added 16 points with his boot.
