Something is going to have to give at Sardis Road this week when the top two teams in the National Schools & Colleges league go head-to-head in Round 5.

Reigning champions Coleg Y Cymoedd will have home advantage over Gwent College and, with both teams unbeaten after four outings, the winner will go into the half-term break in great shape.

The power of the Gwent pack has helped them to blow teams away so far and they were convincing 29-7 winners over Gower College last week. They’ll also already tasted victory at Sardis Road once already this season, having beaten Ysgol Glantaf 31-22 at the all-weather venue.

Coleg Sir Gar will be hoping to return to winning ways against Newport HS after their 26-26 draw with Cardiff & Vale College at the Arms Park last week. It turned into a thriller.

The match was only three minutes old when outside centre Griff Naylor arched over from 35m after fellow centre Dan Stancombe popped up a ball from the floor, Will O’Connor added conversion.

Both teams attacked with ball in hand and it wasn’t long before Coleg Sir Gar flanker Lewis Clayton was in support and stretched out to score, fly half Jac Tregoning added the extras.

The back three of Ioan Copper, Jake Thomas and Jan Schoonbeek proved a handful throughout with their pace and guile. Thomas cut a great inside line from O’Connor and an excellent conversion out wide by the scrum half put his side 14-7 in front.

Coleg Sir Gar hit back through impressive scrum half Luke Davies after the Llanelli-based side swept the ball from one side of the pitch to the other. Tregoning’s conversion tied the scoreline up again.

Cardiff and Vale went into the changing sheds ahead at the break thanks to a rolling maul which saw prop Nathan Evans come up with the ball. O’Connor’s third success from the deck gave the home side a 21-14 at the break.

The second half was only three minutes old before hooker Lewis Morgan peeled from a maul to score in the corner. Tregoning rifled the conversion between the posts

An individual piece of brilliance down the left hand touchline saw Thomas sprint clear and leave Tregoning clutching thin air with a devastating side-step to put Cardiff and Vale 26-21 ahead.

But Connor McMenamin ensured the honours were shared after Sir Gar went close on a couple of occasions close to the line but perseverance paid off for the visitors as both sides remain in the title hunt.

Ysgol Glantaf had outside half Josh Phillips to thank for their 17-14 win at Llandovery College last week when he landed a penalty four minutes from time to steal the win. They host Coleg Llandrillo this week and the North Walians will be hoping for a better trip south than they experienced seven days ago.

Their visit to Whitchurch HS ended in a 46-7 defeat as the home side plundered seven tries, with Wales U18 cap Christ Tshuinza scoring a hat-trick and his second row partner Will Jameson also got a try.
