Llanelli head coach Paul Fisher is happy with his sides progress as they face their toughest test to date against Merthyr at the Wern on Saturday.

The west Walians narrowly avoided relegation last season but an early season resurgence has seen them rise to seventh in the Indigo Group Premiership. And Fisher is confident his side can keep improving.

“We had a tough season last time out but we’ve shown a lot of character to drag ourselves up the table,” said Fisher. “We’ve got some momentum on our side now but we need to keep improving as a side. Hopefully we can keep climbing the table.

“We’ve got some quality players here who work hard for one another. They just need to dig deep and keep working.”

Elsewhere Newport host Cardiff in what is set to be a fiercely contested derby at Rodney Parade. Cardiff are currently top of the table and will want to keep the chasing pack at bay.

Given Newport have lost three of their four home matches this season, Cardiff will certainly travel as big favourites. But strange things happen in this fixture and last season Newport were unlucky to lose twice in games that ended 29-27 and 38-32 in favour of their arch-rivals.

The last Newport victory was on 30 December, 2017, at Rodney Parade. The Blue & Blacks currently hold a 12 points lead over second placed Pontypridd, who head to Llandovery, while third placed Carmarthen Quins travel to fourth placed Aberavon tonight (Friday).

They both have a game in hand on the top two. At the bottom end of the table, Bridgend will be hoping to bounce back from their agonising defeat at Llanelli last weekend when they host fellow strugglers Swansea. The Whites are six points clear of the basement boys from Bridgend and won’t want to see that gap shrink.
