The Squirrels, keen to play their part in the current crisis and to support the NHS, ran a competition for club members and the wider community to guess the number selected by Warburton between 1 and 1948.

The significance of 1948 was it is the year the NHS was formed. Warburton chose a number and had it sealed in an envelope.

Tickets were sold at £1 each and the club sold 2,025 before asking Warburton to reveal his choice. The winning number was 800 – his official Lions number, being the 800th player selected by them when he made his first tour to Australia in 2013.

There were four winners who all guessed correctly – Larry Spittle, Ryan Stacey, Steve Malone and Gareth Hutchings – and they all received a bottle of champagne and other goodies.

In consultation with key workers and the fund-raising team at CVUHB, it has been decided that the proceeds should be spent on providing a fully-stocked hot drinks machine for one of the wards at Llandough Hospital, five Amazon Echo Dots and a bulk purchase of DAB radios to use on the wards.

“This initiative has really brought the community together and special thanks to everyone who took part, to the team at Rhiwbina RFC who organised the whole initiative and a big thank you to Sam Warburton for his continued support,” said a club spokesman.
