Now Welsh Premiership club RGC 1404 can add another professional player to their growing list with former scrum half Alex Schwarz joining Wasps on a short-term contract from Cornish Pirates.
The ex-Wales U18 cap is following his former half-back partner Jacob Botica into the pro ranks by joining the English Premiership outfit. Botica went to the Dragons, while another of his old outside halves, Billy McBryde, is currently at Doncaster Knights.
With a couple of scrum halves away on international duty or ruled out with injury, Wasps have recruited the 27-year-old Schwarz to provide back up. He has previously played for Italian Top 12 side Rugby Colorno and represented Scarlets Premiership Select in the British & Irish Cup.
“With Dan Robson and Will Porter unavailable to us, we needed to bring in some more cover at scrum-half,” explained Wasps head coach Lee Blackett.
“Alex is an experienced player, who will add a lot to our young scrum-half group for the next month or so. We look forward to welcoming him to the club.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to Alan Paver, Gavin Cattle and everyone at Cornish Pirates for the allowing us to take a number of their players on loan over the past few weeks. It is obvious from how easily their loan players have adapted to our set-up, that they are a very well-coached club.”
The Welsh Premiership has long been an ideal stepping stone for players hoping to reach the top. Last weekend former Llandovery prop Wyn Jones was named as the Man of the Match in Wales’ Six Nations win over Ireland, while in the Autumn Nations Cup, James Botham stepped up from Cardiff RFC and the Blues Academy into the Welsh back row.
