Outside-half Evans was magnificent throughout, scoring 21 points including three tries in a performance of brilliance. Maesteg are unbeaten at the halfway mark of the Championship Cup and now face a mouth-watering clash against Neath at the Gnoll next weekend.
This was a tight affair but Evans’ brilliance was the difference with the talented number 10 dancing past three defenders for one of his tries, while another involved a 40 yard break, and his third saw him on the end of a well-worked team try. To their credit Tata Steel played their part in an enthralling contest with David Jones dotting down from short range and Aled Cockwell claiming their second try.
Elsewhere, in the Championship Cup Trebanos earned the Swansea Valley bragging rights as they comprehensively beat local rivals Ystalyfera 35-3 at home. The hosts dominated from start to finish and Ystalyfera had no answer to their physicality.

Llyr Davies powered over for a brace of tries from short range, while Jay Weaver also grabbed a try with a touchdown at the far right-hand corner. Rhys Thomas also got in on the try scoring act as he showered tremendous strength to smash his way over the line. Outside-half Rhys Davies also contributed heavily with a noteworthy 15 points from the kicking tee. Iestyn Scott scored Ystalyfera’s only penalty.
This was Trebanos’ first competitive game in 18 months and this bonus point win puts them temporarily at the top of Group 4, with a vitally important clash away at Narberth next weekend to come. In the WRU Bowl, St Clear’s beat Laugharne 12-0 in a fiercely contested derby, with two first-half tries enough to get them over the line.
Full back Rhodri Jones opened the scoring for St Clear’s with a clever try down the right flank and then scrum half Jac Howells crossed at the posts for a second which half back partner Che Thomas converted. Laugharne were up for the fight in the second half and a completely different prospect.
Outstanding for Gareth Jones, home side was No 8 Will Icke, who galloped away to help set-up the first try and stood head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch. In the WRU Plate arguably the result of the day was Builth Wells’ 31-14 victory over Bedlinog.
St Joseph also won a terrific game of rugby 38-31 away at Llanishen in District B1 of the Plate, while Rumney also edged out St Peter’s 24-21 in the same group.
In District A3, Newport High School Old Boys continued their unbeaten start to the season with 33-15 victory over Oakdale, scoring five tries in the process. Oakdale replied with two of their own but it wasn’t enough as NHSOB moved to the top of the table in their section.
