Lampeter scoop first success

West Swansea Hawks v Lampeter Ladies

Charlotte Woolard of West Swansea Hawks Ladies is tackled by Carwen Richards of Lampeter Ladies in the South Wales Plate

West Swansea Hawks welcomed Lampeter Ladies to Pontarddulais on Sunday for the second round of the South Wales Plate. Despite putting up a sterling effort, it was the visitors who came away victorious, with a 0-17 triumph.

After only playing a handful of matches between them since December 2019 due to the pandemic and the change of season format, both teams were looking to keep building and enjoy the fixture with several players playing their first senior matches.

The visitors were first out of the blocks with a robust attack in the Hawks half allowing Elin Gapper to crash over the line for the opening try.

The Hawks did well to answer back and set up the attack in Lampeter’s 22. Big carries from the back row of Lucy Gwyther and Aimee Rogers brought the hosts within inches of the line but a solid defence from Lampeter kept them away from the scoreboard.

Securing back the ball, Lampeter cleared upfield and a run out wide freed up Sian Davies to run over the line for their second try of the game. Lampeter went in at the break with a comfortable 10-0 lead.

Running out for the second half, the Hawks looked to turn their solid efforts into points on the board but struggled to get over the gain-line which allowed Lampeter to capitalise and take control.

Attacking in the Hawks 22, Lampeter drew in the defence and spied the gap in defence for Ashley James to power over the whitewash for the third try of the game. Fiona Protheroe with the conversion extended the visitors lead to 17-0.

Unfortunately, an injury to West Swansea Hawks’ Keira Evans led to the game being abandoned with Lampeter taking the win.

Both sides will return to action on the September 26 with Lampeter hosting Pembroke and the Hawks travelling to Tumble RFC.
