Met win Cardiff derby… now for Loughborough!

Jack Silvester of Cardiff Metropolitan University in his team's win over Cardiff University

Danny Milton had little time to bask in the glory, and relief, of winning the BUCS Super Rugby battle with Cardiff University this week.

The Cardiff Metropolitan director of rugby was more than a little bit relieved to see Brad Roderick-Evans keep his cool and kick a last-gasp penalty to secure a 23-20 win at Cardiff Arms Park.

Local bragging rights secure once more, they now have to focus on welcoming Loughborough next week.

“That’s the thing with BUCS Super Rugby, there is never an easy week. The competition just keeps on building and you get little or no chance to catch your breath,” said Milton.

“While it was great to sneak over the line against Cardiff Uni, you very quickly realise it is Loughborough at home next week and then Hartpury the week after. It is fantastic for the players.

“For many of them who played at the Arms Park it will have been the pinnacle of their career.

“The atmosphere was incredible, there was a big and noisy crowd and it was a brilliant advert for BUCS Super Rugby.

“We were very lucky in the end and at times Cardiff Uni were the better side. It was their cup final and they really rose to the occasion.

“We had victory snatched from us the week before against Durham when they scored a try in the last minute to draw 13-13, so it was nice to get the rub of the green late on in this one.

“There are lots of things for us to work on.”

Next week’s game will bring Milton into direct opposition with one of his former students at Cyncoed, Scott Sneddon, who has returned from Hong Kong to take over as the head coach at Loughborough.

His side, which features former Dragons Under-18 player Iwan Bergwin at scrum-half, beat Northumbria 48-24 to make it back-to-back wins after their 17-11 victory at Hartpury in Round 1.

Swansea University fell to a second defeat as they were overhauled by Leeds Beckett University. A week after losing 64-10 at home to Exeter, they were beaten 38-24 in a much improved performance.

Scrum-half Harri Williams gave them a great start with the first of the game’s eight tries and Gwyn Parks added the extras.

Swansea led 17-14 at the break, having added a second try, but then conceded two tries and a penalty to trail by 14 points.

Wing Cameron Taylor notched a third try for the visitors, which Parks again improved, and at 31-24 they were still in the hunt.

Then they conceded a 40-metre interception try to Conor Oresanya and Olly Toomey’s conversion was the final nail in the coffin as he ended with 13 points.
