Law’s Cardiff earn bragging rights

Head coach of Cardiff Steve Law

Home head coach Steve Law fielded a capital team packed full of full-time regional talent and backs Dan Fish, Aled Summerhill (2) and Harri Millard all scored in a bonus-point Cardiff win. But Pontypridd’s youngsters deserve great credit for staying in the battle and never giving in because before kick-off it looked like it could be a one-sided contest.

Cardiff claimed a 29-15 victory over regional rivals Pontypridd on Friday night, but the margin wasn’t as big as expected given the strength of the Blue and Blacks side.

Cardiff led 17-3 at the break. Wing Summerhill had an early run, but promising Pontypridd fly-half Ben Burnell kicked the visitors into the lead with a penalty.

Jacob Beetham’s kick levelled the scores before Pontypridd’s Dale Stuckey saw yellow and the visitors lost a line-out which allowed Fish to cross. Beetham booted the extras.

Fish then turned from scorer to creator as he put through a nice kick which Summerhill collected to dot down. Beetham again converted.

Stuckey made up for his first-half sin binning with a try at the start of the second period which gave Pontypridd hope. Burnell set-up the effort although he couldn’t add the extra two points.

But Summerhill made it a brace for the evening as the tries kept coming. Pontypridd grabbed a penalty score after Cardiff’s Theo Bevacqua sacked a driving line-out and saw yellow.

It didn’t stop Millard from scoring Cardiff’s crucial fourth try in the 63rd minute and Beetham’s kick made the game safe for Law’s men despite them losing Rory Harries to a late yellow. Newport celebrated their first game at Spytty Park with a 27-16 comeback victory over Premiership big spenders Merthyr.

It was a game of two halves’ which saw Merthyr race into a 13-point first half lead, but a resilient Newport dominated the second half to cruise to victory. Newport’s Josh Skinner then saw yellow, and Merthyr capitalised immediately through hooker Rhys Williams who crashed over off the back of a driving line out to score a converted try.

The game was soon turned on its head when Dragons prospect Lennon Greggains went over to put Newport in command. Will Reed converted to edge his side in front.

The Black and Ambers then started to build a lead as Reed kicked two penalties in close succession to put his side 20-13 up. But Oli Andrews scored a late converted try which sealed a well-deserved win for the Black & Ambers.

RGC claimed their first victory of the season with a narrow win over Ebbw Vale which has blown the eastern conference of the Premiership Cup wide open. The match was very tense throughout and a lack of discipline from both sides made it difficult for them to create many clear-cut chances.

RGC’s battling character frustrated their opponents and played a big part in their success. The first half was a scrappy affair with both sides making several handling errors as the rain made free flowing rugby a tough challenge.

First blood went to Ebbw Vale through a Lewis K Williams penalty. Williams soon after doubled his sides lead with another routine penalty.

RGC reacted well and scored their first points of the game through the boot of Evan Lloyd who kicked a monster penalty from the half-way line. The hosts then scored the first try of the match through Brodie Coghlan who touched down in the corner.

Evan Lloyd successfully converted to give RGC a 10-6 first half lead. RGC defended well in the opening stages of the second half and withstood some sustained pressure from Greg Woods’ Ebbw Vale as they battled to save their slender lead.

But The Steelmen eventually found a way through with a try under the posts. Williams converted with ease to give his side a narrow 13-10 lead. The game took another turn when RGC snatched the lead back with a converted try which came from their driving pack.

RGC’s Pedr Jones was yellow carded with ten minutes to go but this did not cost his side their first win of the season as they ran out 17-13 winners.
