A full-house of five points enabled them to leap-frog Cardiff and take a one-point lead at the top after five games. The visitors scored six tries as they comfortably won the Gwent derby.

Former Wales and Dragons wing Dafydd Howells gave the Steelmen the perfect start with a try after only a minute’s play, but that’s as good as it got for the home side. Ethan Phillips added a second in the second half and there were two conversions and a penalty to add.

But Newport galloped to a memorable win with tries from Matt Powell (2), Lennon Greggains, Garin Harris and Matt O’Brien. They also had a penalty try and Will Reed converted two and kicked tow penalties, while O’Brien also added a conversion.

Cardiff picked up two bonus points at The Wern, but were sent back down the A470 with their tails between their legs after losing 31-26 to Merthyr.

The visitors plundered four tries via Ioan Evans, Sam James, George Moore and Jacob Beetham, three of which Jack Maynard improved. But they were undone by their former No 10 Gareth Thompson.

Revelling in playing against his old team mates he scored a try, converted all four home scores and added a penalty for a match haul of 16 points. There was also a try for former Cardiff lock Callum Bradbury, with Harley Thompson and Sam Jones grabbing the others.

Pontypridd and RGC played out a 78 point thriller at Sardis Road than ended up in a 40-38 win for the home team in a game in which scrum half Joel Raikes made his 150th Ponty appearance.

It took a penalty from Wales U20 outside half Ben Burnell in the 79th minute to steal the win from the Gogs.
