Looking to end the first block of games on a high, Morriston and Tondu went toe to toe at Morriston RFC in the WRU plate.

The hosts were first out of the blocks with a break from Kirsty King backed up by Becky Watkins to take play into their opponents 22. Quick ball out wide sending King over for the opening try of the game.

Tondu looked to answer back straight away with a blitzing attack in Morriston’s half only to be turned over metres from the whitewash. But the visitors kept their composure, re-gained possession and raced over the line to level the scores with a try from Verity Butt.

Just before half time Butt had the chance to go again. Gathering the ball on her own 22 line, she pierced through Morriston’s defence and had the pace to go on her own to score under the posts.

Play halted momentarily just before Tondu’s Louise Jones could take the conversion after a serious injury to one of the hosts just on the stroke of half time.

Half-Time – Morriston Ladies 5 – 12 Tondu

Looking to build on their strong finish to the first half, Tondu spied the break once again with Georgia Sturgess flew over the line in the corner to extend the Titans lead 5-17.

But despite the score not sitting in their favour, Morriston dug in deep and Sarah John powered over the line for her side’s second try. John converting her own try to narrow the scores 12-17.

Similar to the first half, Tondu replied with Kayleigh Winter-Green finishing off a strong attack in Morriston’s 22 to come away with the points and extend her side’s lead, 12-22.

As the game entered its final few minutes, Morriston spied the break and ran the ball into Tondu’s 22 only to be brought down inches from the try line. But the referee awarded the penalty to the ladies in red for a high tackle to keep them in control. Taking it quickly, the hosts recycled the ball out wide and grounded the ball over the line through the hands of Chelsea Davey to bring the scores to 17-22.

With only one try the difference in the scores Morriston set up camp in Tondu’s 22, but the visitors defence held solid. Morriston built up the phases and came agonisingly close to the line only for a loose pass to be picked up by the visitors and cleared for the final whistle.
