Evans calls for reaction from Llandovery

Euros Evans is demanding a reaction from his Llandovery players when they head to St Helen’s to meet Swansea in the Indigo Group Premiership tonight (Thursday, 3 March).

The Drovers were beaten at home by Pontypridd on Sunday – their second reverse at Church Bank in their four league games to date. That has left Evans concerned about the chances of his side challenging for honours.

“If you lose once it makes life difficult, but when you lose two games out of 11 things get even tougher. We can’t afford another slip if we want to make the play-offs,” said Evans.

“It was disappointing to lose at home again last weekend, especially after we had such a good win at Merthyr the week before. We were good in the first half, but left a lot of points out there.

“We really could have been out of sight by half-time. Then an interception try changed the face of the game and Ponty went on to win 36-24.

“We have to react to that defeat at Swansea. They had a good win in Carmarthen and so we are expecting another very tough game.”

Swansea’s triumph at Carmarthen Park was their first win on four games in the Premiership this season and left head coach Hugh Gustafson fulsome in his praise of his team’s character and resilience to hold on in the end after going down to 13 players.

“Llandovery will play with a different style to Carmarthen and it has been important this week to recover from the weekend,” said Gustafson, whose side won 26-21.

“We showed in Carmarthen that we had learned some of the harsh lessons given to us in north Wales by RGC the previous week. Now we will need to improve again.”

Winning breeds confidence and Gustafson was delighted with the controlling influence and maturity displayed against the Quins by half-backs Matthew Aubrey and James Davies. The kicking of full back Cai Evans was another important element.

Llandovery have already beaten the Whites twice this season in the WRU Premiership Cup. They were 21-5 winners at home and triumphed 45-17 at St Helen’s.
