Phonenix dominated possession in the opening quarter and a powerful 30 metre run from Angharad Kitchener almost brought the opening score but the Breconshire side however showed a gritty determination in defence
Sustained driving play from the Phoenix pack brought about the first home score, hooker Rosie Carr took play close to the Gwernyfed line and the habitual hunting instincts of Amy Stevens in the red zone saw her crash over. Rosie Carr added the extras.
Phoenix continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession and increased their lead when Carr shook off several attempted tackles to score a fine try, to give the home side a 12-0 lead at the interval.
After the break, Phoenix began to look for a more expansive approach. Carys Thomas and Leanne Burnell combined in midfield and the supporting Brit Price crashed over.
Price was again soon in the action, sprinting clear from 40 metres to score at the posts, Nicky Morgan adding the extras.
Phoenix were now playing with confidence, and Burnell with an arcing run put Price over for an impressive hat trick, Morgan converting.
Phoenix finished the match strongly, Burnell racing over wide out. Outside half Lucy Thomas who had set her backs in motion throughout the match then took her opportunity to slice through to score, Morgan converting for a comprehensive victory despite the considerable Gwernyfed defensive effort.
For Gwernyfed No.8 Bronnie Jones was chosen best forward with Paige Jones best back doubling up at scrum half and centre. For Phoenix Angharad Kitchener was chosen best forward with Brit Price best back.
