Dale McIntosh is determined to end his Merthyr career on a high but is wary of the threats posed by a strong Carmarthen Quins side tonight.

The former Wales international has been coaching Merthyr for the past seven years, but recently announced he would be leaving at the end of the season along with his assistant coaches Robert Sidoli, and Gavin Dacey. Merthyr are currently third in the Premiership table, and McIntosh has challenged his players to end the season on a high.

“I don’t like the limelight, and this isn’t about me but I do want to end on a high,” he said. “I have a fantastic backroom staff who are also leaving so it would be special to end on a high for them but more importantly the players.

“They’ve been fantastic since I’ve been here, they’ve got a brilliant work ethic, and they deserve some success this season, and beyond. Merthyr are in a very good place moving forward, I can tell you that.

“It’s been a tough period because of covid, and the season has felt disjointed, but we are a tight group, and we’ve got better as the season has progressed.” Merthyr comprehensively beat Llanelli last time out in what was arguably their best performance this season.

Tonight they host a Carmarthen Quins side who are currently seventh in the table at the Wern.

Merthyr are firm favourites to come out on top, but McIntosh is wary of a very talented Carmarthen side.

“On paper they have a very talented side,” said the former Pontypridd man. “They aren’t a side we can take lightly that’s for sure.

“They’ve got a lot of experienced Premiership players in their ranks like the Dale Ford’s, and the Haydn Pugh’s of this world. Personally, I think they’ve looked a little disjointed of late, but they can hurt sides.

“They have a back line that can rip teams to shreds if they get quick, front foot ball, while their forwards are quite strong. For us it will be about dominating them physically because if we don’t, and they get their backs into space then they are going to cause us some serious problems.

“But having said that we are confident in our own ability, and I’m hopeful we can get the result, if not the five points.”
