Treorchy maintain unbeaten streak

They took their time to do so, scraping home 29-25 thanks to a try from centre Simon Veall with the last play of a tremendous, back and fore tussle. It meant Newbridge were able to close the gap at the top to nine points with their sixth win out of six.

Principality Premiership bound Treorchy maintained their unbeaten run in Division 1 East Central as they just managed to pip Porth Quins 24-22 away from home to make it six out of six and move up to fourth in the table.
Mountain Ash are one place above them having extended their unbeaten record to seven games with a convincing home win over second placed St Peter’s. They ran out victors by 39-13.
The big game in Division 1 East was at Newbridge, where the home side were hoping to maintain their unbeaten run and leapfrog visiting Brynmawr to move into second place.

Brynmawr at least left with two bonus points after scoring four tries. They were 18-15 to the good at the break and led 25-22 until Veall’s dramatic intervention at the death.

Newbridge had other tries from hooker Stuart Vokes, Cian Jones and a penalty try. Eamon Rees added three conversions and also kicked a penalty.

Top of the table Penallta were pushed to the limit at Pontypool United, where the home side did their very best to end their league campaign on a high. It was top v fourth, but it was hard to tell the difference between the two sides.

In the end, Penallta extended their unbeaten run to eight games as they became the first team to win at Pontypool United since Senghennydd triumphed 24-3 on 27 November. Penallta are due to face second placed Newbridge on 7 May in what could be a title decider.

In Division 1 North, Llandudno hosted Pwllhelli  and won 45-0. There was a hat-trick for No 8 Morgan Owen among the seven tries. The Goats were the last champions and used the game to close the gap to three points on league leaders Nanty Conwy.

Nant’s only defeat of the season defeat was a 14-10 loss at Llandudno on 11 December and they could only look on as their biggest rivals edged ever nearer holding onto the title. In fact, Llandudno could be crowned champions if they beat Bala next weekend in what looks like being their final fixture.

Both bottom of the table Bro Ffestiniog and lowly Dogellau have been reluctant to play against Llandudno and if they refuse to fulfil the matches the likelihood is that The Gotas will be awarded two bonus point wins.

In Division 1 West Central, unbeaten leader Skewen’s march to the title was held up when their game with bottom of the table Brynamman was postponed. That gave third placed Ammanford the chance to close the gap at the top to 11 points courtesy of a 48-18 home win over Nantyffyllon as they moved into second.
