Chargers were ‘in charge’ at the beginning of the match as they led within seconds, with fly half Megan Thomas shrugging off several tackles to score the opening try. She just missed a lengthy conversion in attempt to extend their early success.
Thomas scored her second try ten minutes later, hustling over several bodies to place under the posts. This time, Sienna Graham’s effort dipped under the bar.
Merchedd got back into the game after excellent work from Celyn Morgan, The number ten dashed from within her own half to score with ease. Chloe Wilkins converted consummately, meaning there was just a three-point gap at the break.
Graham, the replacement centre, came more into the game for Chargers in the second half. She scored the third try for the leaders, after running on the outside after several brilliant turnovers from the Chargers forwards.
Lucy Grenfell made it 20-7, scoring yet again as the Chargers continued domination. The number nine received a quick offload on the 22 and put the game seemingly out of reach for the West Walians.
Merchedd looked to their talisman in Celyn Morgan to get them back into the game, and she did with a brilliant feint and dodge around oncoming tacklers to ground. It was again converted, meaning they were within just one converted score.
But Chargers held on to win, after their Under-18s came up just short earlier. A successful day all around for the Newbridge-based outfit.
