Revenge was sweet for Bargoed as they made up for the disappointment of losing to Neath in the WRU Championship Cup final by beating Ystrad Rhondda in the Worthington’s Mid District Cup final.

Ystrad were the only team to beat The Bulls in their successful run to the top of the Admiral Championship table, but were unable to stop them from taking the title back to Bargoed Park.

Centre Steff Jones scored twice for the winners and his half-back partner James Leadbeater got another try as they went on to win 24-7 in the rain at Sardis Road.

“All credit has got to go to the coaches and the players who have done a fantastic job this year. It has been a very long and difficult season – we started training back in May last year, it’s been 12 months of rugby for us,” ,” said Bargoed’s director of rugby, Jeremy Rogers.

“Ystrad Rhondda are a really well organised side, they are well coached and have got some key players. They did a job on us up in Ystrad and I think the boys were pretty focussed on getting the result and righting the wrongs of the game up there.”

Bargoed struck first with a Jones penalty and then he converted Leadbeater’s try. Outside half Jacob Symes hit back with a penalty for Ystrad before Jones raced 60 metres to score an interception try that he also converted to make it 17-3 at the break.

Jones scored again in the early stages of the second half. Ystrad never gave up and as well as preventing Bargoed from scoring again, their hard work was eventually rewarded with a consolation try through replacement Callum Phillips.

“We want to win the Championship again next year, so I think it’s just about focussing on our own game and us trying to do the right thing,” added Rogers.

“It’s really important we get the planning and preparation right for next season. I think we got it right this year in terms of the way we’ve lasted the course, but it’s a different challenge next year.”
