Starting on Thursday, 2 June at Bangor RFC, they will snake their way home from north to south Wales by visiting each of the founder member clubs of the WRU. They expect the fund-raising adventure to take three days, arriving back at their clubhouse on Saturday night.
The riders are hoping to top £3,000 for their efforts with all proceeds going to the Noah’s Ark Appeal and Prostate Cancer Cymru. You can make a donation via their fund raising page HERE
This is the club’s 150th anniversary and they were able to celebrate along with Neath RFC, who will be one of the clubs visited along the route. The WRU was formed at The Castle Hotel, in Neath, on 12 March, 1881, with Llandeilo being one of the 11 founder members.
A decade earlier an article in the Carmarthen Journal confirmed games being played between rugby sides from Llandelio, Neath, Lampeter College and Llandovery College. The cyclists will be visiting all three towns on their route, along with Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Llanelli, Merthyr, Brecon, Pontypool and Bangor
Llandeilo were also one of the founding members of the South Wales Challenge Cup in the 1877-78 season, along with Carmarthen, Cardiff, Talgarth, Merthyr, Brecon, Cowbridge Grammar School, Llanelli, Monmouth, Lampeter College, 10th Glamorgan Rifle Volunteers, Llandovery College, Pontypool, Newport, Neath, Swansea and Abergavenny.
In 1887, they reached the final against Neath only to lose by a try which was scored after their young full back had been carried off with a broken collar bone.
