RGC kick-off with win over English Championship new boys Caldy

Afon Bagshaw raced in for two tries

RGC gave notice of their growth under head coach Ceri Jones as they kicked-off their pre-season campaign with an impressive delighted 36-21 win over newly promoted Caldy at Ruthin RFC.

Caldy earned their ticket into the Championship in England by winning the National League One title last season and arrived with 45 players. Matt Cairns took the chance to give all of them a run out in a game split into four quarters.

Hooker Rhodri King crossed in the corner to open the scoring before Caldy hit back with a brace of tries through their pack. Their driving maul was particularly effective, as was the elusive running and speed of Afon Bagshaw for the home side.

He crossed for two tries of his own, the latter converted by Sam Earl-Jones, and there were driving maul tries form Bryn Jones and Aaron Williams. Jordan Scott then carried hard for the final home try, which Sam Rogers improved.

“Our control and management of the game stood out.  They tested us physically in the first 30 minutes and I was pleased to see how we dealt with that,” said Jones.

“A lot of the problems early on were down to us giving away penalties and giving them territory. When we realised that the game changed and we applied the pressure at key moments.

“The good thing about playing a team like Caldy is that they will offer similar threats to those the Welsh Premiership sides will come at us with – a physical set piece with the attacking mauls.

“We dealt with that and it was good to see us get some tries with our driving maul, including one when we only had 13 men on the field.”

This weekend (20 August) the RGC Senior Academy take on the Royal marines Corps at Tower Fields, Llangollen.
