Magnificent seven try haul gets Pooler off to a flyer

Ex-Dragons scrum half Dan Babos was among the Pontypool try scorers

Pontypool underlined why they are everyone’s favourites for promotion to the Indigo Premiership this season as they ran in seven tries at South Parade to thrash Maesteg Harlequins 50-3 in their opening game in the Admiral Championship.

Pat Lewis, Sam Scarfe, Sam Cochrane, Deon Smith, Dan Babos, Garin Price, and Joel Mahony scored their tries. The pick of the bunch came when Price sliced through the Quins defence, the ball went through five sets of hands and then ended up back with Price, who finished off a majestic team try.

Cardiff Met were also big winners in the first round as they ran riot to record a convincing 49-10 home win over Trebanos. Ryan Jones, Toby Baldwin, Tyler Olding, Ardal Yallop, Joe Westwood, Steffan Davies and Brandon Harvey all scored tries for the students.

Former Wasps academy player Baldwin was arguably the best player on the pitch, and his try from 40 metres was the best of the afternoon as Trebanos had no answer to the skill and physicality of their hosts.

Neath, who are also among the promotion favourites, edged out reigning champions Bargoed 24-16 in a hotly contested encounter at The Gnoll. Bargoed raced into an early 16-0 lead with openside flanker Keaton Davies running a good support line to score a try that Steffan Jones improved before adding three penalties.

But Neath launched a mightily impressive comeback, which was started by Ryan Griffiths when he touched down in the left corner. Hooker Josh Clarke made it a four-point game as he showed tremendous strength to force his way over the line before Jon Barley handed the home side the the lead with another try to seal the win.

Tries from Zach Bartlett, Connah Baughan, and a brace from Chris Johnsey helped secure Cross Keys an impressive 29-17 away victory over Ystalyfera. Elsewhere, Bedwas beat Glamorgan Wanderers 37-26 in a game in which the Wanderers found themselves 19 points ahead at the break and with a try bonus already in the bag.

But in a classic game of ‘two halves’ the ‘Was fought back to not only pick up a bonus-point of their own after the break, but also go on to win by 11 points with 30 unanswered points in the second half. Debutant outside half Lloyd Wilkins helped himself to 17 points with the boot.

The Wanderers picked up first half tries from Osian Phillips, Jac Williams, Steffan Davies and Ioan Cooper, three of which Aled Evans converted, while Dale Rogers, Mike Dacey, Joe Hole and Lewis Crane crossed for the home side.

Narberth had three penalties from full back Nick Gale to thank for their 9-3 interval lead at home against Ystrad Rhondda. Jacob Symes kicked on for the visitors, but that was as good as it got for them.

In the second half, a try from scrum half Lewys Gibby, which Gale improved, earned the Otters a 16-3 win in the end.
