‘The Rocks’ refuse to crumble at Cambrian Welfare

St Peter’s made it four from four to remain four points clear at the top of Admiral Division 1 East Central as they won 25-12 at Cambrian Welfare.

Having scored just before the break to take a 13-12 lead into the second half, ‘The Rocks’ stayed firmly in control in the second 40 to add two more tries. Loose head prop Cary Davies and flanker Jack Rogers were the try scorers in the opening period, while full back Callum Bailey and scrum half Jake Donovan ensured St Peter’s went home with a fourth successive bonus-point win. 

Treorchy are the closest side to the league leaders and they went on the rampage with a 10-try-laden 62-5 triumph at Rhiwbina. Rumney also had a big win on the road as they triumphed 33-12 at Porth Quins. 

Luke Fear, Callum McDonald, Charlie Bennett, Mike Young and Tom Maton scored the tries to clinch the bonus point and Chris Maton added four conversions. The Quins hit back with two tries. 

In Division 1 East, Brecon ended Penallta’s unbeaten run in a humdinger of a game at Parc de Pugh. The home side came up with three tries to run out 21-8 victors. 

Owen Morgan scored two of the home tries and Jake Crockett got the other and added three conversions. The result was good news for unbeaten league leaders Newbridge, who ran in five tries in their 33-8 home win over Blaenavon to edge a point further ahead of Brecon thanks to their fourth consecutive bonus-point victory. 

Wing Sam Watkins crossed for two of the tries and the others came from centre Jonny Paynter, wing Cian Jones and Lloyd Ford. Eamonn Rees converted four of them. 

Bedlinog ran out 27-19 winners at Dowlais thanks to tries from Aaron Harris, Andrew Murphy and Anthony Markey. Gethin Coleman converted all three and kicked two penalties to bag 10 points in the game.

It’s tight at the top in Division 1 North, where Nant Conwy and Ruthin are tied on 19 points with unbeaten records. Nant were far too good for Llangefni, winning 62-5 on the road, while second placed Ruthin also picked up a bonus-point win away from home thanks to their 32-27 triumph at COBRA. 

Caernarfon were forced to dig deep to win 22-18 at Bala to hang onto their unbeaten record. Ioan Ifans, Tomos Jones, Mac Jones and Ieuan Owen crossed for the tries that earned a bonus point, while Guto Pierce added a conversion. 

Dolgellau picked up their first win of the season with a 25-17 home win over Dinbych. Veteran lock Dewi Thomas set the ball rolling for the home side with the first try and then wing Simon Jones snapped up a loose ball and sprinted clear for the second. 

The visitors replied with a try of their own from wing Jordan Wynne, but it was 15-5 at the break after Marius Jones barged his way over for try No 3 for Dolgellau. Iwan Evans added the bonus-point try int eh second half, but it took a late Dion Jones penalty to make the game safe after a spirited fightback from Dinbych. 

In Division 1 West Central, tries from Elis Lewis and Liam Smith, along with five points from the boot of Ryan Wiliams, weren’t enough to stop Ammanford slipping to their first defeat of the season as they went down 20-15 at Kenfig Hill. 

Their defeat allowed Bonymaen to move four points clear at the top of the table as they stretched their winning run to four games with a narrow squeak at Waunarlwydd, where they came out on top 38-33. 

Llangennech made it three bonus-point wins from three as they turned on the style to beat Whitland 57-14 in Division 1 West. The table-toppers ran in nine tries, with Shaun Edwards leading the way with two. 

Tom Barnes, Gareth George, Callum Harries, Jordan Saunders, Callum Jenkins, Thomas Davies and Tom Davies crossed for the other tries for the visitors. Whitland had tries from Jack Richards and Jonny Thomas, one of which was converted by Geraint Jones. 

Llangennech are level on 15 points with Crymych, who won 25-23 at Gowerton, and Newcastle Emlyn, who triumphed 28-23 at Gorseinon, but have a game in hand.
