The Wizards have been competing at the cutting edge of the table for the past few seasons but have fallen just short when it mattered. But it seems they have finally turned the corner and look well-placed to challenge for silverware this season with a significant tactical change turning them into the most potent attacking side in the Premiership.
“We are six from six with bonus points so you can’t argue with that,” said Hyatt. “We’ve changed the way we play, certainly in terms of our attack.
“We’ve got Chris Davies who is now in charge of our attacking game. If I’m honest I thought we would take a little bit longer to bed into those changes, but I think the reason we’ve excelled is because the players are really enjoying the way we are playing, and there’s a good alignment between the way we are trying to play and the way we are playing.
“We are very mindful of not just our attacking game but our defence alongside our strength and conditioning. We were very conscious of the fact we needed to evolve the way we played not just to drive standards but for the players as well.
“The most important thing is we are seeing constant growth in certain aspects of our game. We are scoring lots of tries, and we’ve got four of the five leading try scorers in the Premiership so far this season.
“We’ve got a number of players who are playing really good rugby.”
While their league form has been exceptional the Wizards turn their attention to the WRU Premiership Cup this weekend where they take on struggling Bridgend at the Brewery Field in a local derby.
It is very difficult to see a way Bridgend can overcome Aberavon, but Hyatt insists his side won’t underestimate the Ravens.
“First and foremost, it’s a local derby which adds some spice,” said Hyatt.
“They are always keenly fought encounters between both clubs. We had a really good run in the cup last season, and it’s a competition we really enjoy playing in.
“When you are top of the league teams raise their game against you. Merthyr played their best game against us recently, but we still came out on top.
“Everybody raises their game when they play the team that’s top of their league. We are enjoying that challenge though, and we are well aware we’ve got to be at the top of our game every week to get the result.”
Elsewhere, Carmarthen Quins host RGC while Newport travel to St Helen’s for a tough clash against Swansea. Merthyr are also in action as they take on Llandovery at the Wern.
