Having already beaten reigning champions Cardiff & Vale College 26-25 in the Welsh capital, and then taken the scalp of Ysgol Glantaf at home, 28-12, they made it three out of three with a hard-fought triumph at Whitchurch that keeps them two points clear at the top of the table
“We shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times by letting Whitchurch, who were a very good side, back into the game. It was far too close for comfort in the end,” admitted Sir Gar director of rugby, Euros Evans.
“We were eight points up and gave them a last chance at the end. It’s great to score six tries, but not so good to concede six.
“We’ve still got a few players to return from injury and with four games to go we are in with a chance of making the final. Having not been there for a couple of years it is important for the prestige of our rugby programme that we get back to that level.”
Sir Gar have Bridgend College and Coleg Llandrillo to face at home and have tricky away games at Llandovery College, last season’s runners up, and old foes Coleg Y Cymoedd. Cymoedd are currently three points behind in third having played one game more.
Wing Harri Fuller led the charge for Sir Gar with their first try and others flowed from Jac Pritchard, Alfie Evans-Fecci, Mac James, Jac Delaney and Steffan Evans. Whitchurch replied with tries from Ethan Evans, Matty Young, Sol Rees, Jack Sweeney, Isaac Godfrey and Jon Beya, with Young also landed four conversions.
Champions CAVC made it four wins in a row following their one-point defeat to Sir Gar as they held Coleg Gwent scoreless in a devastating 33-0 home win. Gwent had just run into some form having beaten both Glantaf (12-6) and Sir Gar (15-13) in their two previous outings but were outgunned by their hosts.
Scott Delnevo ran in two of the five tries for CAVC to join Ben Spittle (Whitchurch HS) and Matthew Boskey (Gower College) at the top of the try scoring charts with eight. There were others for Archie Lloyd, Gethin Howells and Tom Hughes, who also chipped in with four conversions.
CAVC are now only two points behind Sir Gar with games to come against Newport HS and Whitchurch HS away from home and Neath Port Talbot College and Gower College at home. Their 37-27 win at Sardis Road over Cymoedd in the last round in a game that was another crucial triumph in their bid to make it back-to-back final appearances.
Cymoedd stayed in the battle for a top two finish by edging out Newport HS 13-3. Gavin Parry and Kyel Harris crossed for home tries and Llew Brown kicked a penalty, while Newport HS managed only a Finley Chadwick penalty.
The battle for the top six places has really intensified and Gower College are well in the mix. Their 21-18 home win over Llandrillo moved them up into fourth place. The north Walians have given a great account of themselves this season and had tries from Finn Jones and Ryan Robertson but were overtaken by three converted tries from the home side.
