Ackerman makes mark on Keys debut

Harri Ackerman in action for Wales U18 earlier this year

Wales U18 centre Harri Ackerman made a big impression on his debut for Cross Keys as he romped away to score two tries and pick up the man of the match award in their 50-7 win over Bedwas in the Admiral Championship.

The Dragons Academy youngster scored in each half as the home side ran riot to score eight tries – three in the first half to lead 21-7 and then five more after the break.

One of the tries came from a driving maul from a line-out that was 20 metres out from the Bedwas try line. It moved them up to fourth in the table.

Still top of the log are Neath, who notched their seventh win in eight games to remain two points clear of Pontypool, who have a game in hand. They put the students of Cardiff Met to the sword in a 58-17 triumph.

To their credit, the students stayed in the fight in the first half and were well in contention at 25-17. In the end, though, the power of the home pack took its toll, and Neath ran in nine tries.

Lewis Evans helped himself to a hat-trick and there were two in quick succession for Sion Crocker. Ben Atkins, Jon Bayliss, Jay Weaver and Ryan Griffiths got the others. Steff Williams kicked five conversions and added a penalty.

Pontypool made it seven wins out of seven as they notched a significant victory over last season’s designated champions, Bargoed. They ran out 39-27 winners at Pontypool Park in a game Bargoed that saw the visitors start the stronger before Pooler showed superb resilience and character to seal a remarkable turnaround and take maximum points.

Pooler found themselves in a heap of trouble when they went 20 points behind in the first half. Steffan Jones kicked an early penalty and then converted tries by Tom Rice and Dylan Willimas before adding another three-pointer.

Pooler responded with converted tries Pat Lewis and Deon Smith and then Matthew Jarvis kicked a penalty to make it 20-17 to the visitors at the break. Jarvis levelled things up with another penalty in the second half, before Keaton Davies grabbed a third try for Bargoed that Jones again improved to restore their lead.

A penalty try to Pooler then levelled things up again before the home side hit the front for the first time with a second try from Smith that Jarvis again converted. Dylan Kelleher-Griffiths then put the icing on the cake with the bonus-point try at the death, with Jarvis inevitably adding the extras.

Ystrad Rhondda turned on the style at Tata Steel to emerge victorious 57-7. The bonus-point win moved them up to sixth in the table and made it four wins and a draw in their last six games.

“We’re pleased with how we have shaped up this year. We had a tough year last year and suffered with a lot of injuries,” said coach Dylan Jones.

“The season was all over the place, so it was really hard to find any momentum. After a difficult start, we’ve got a bit of consistency now, and we are playing some excellent rugby.

“We’re a small village club, so to be able to play and compete against the likes of Neath and Pontypool is incredible. Just playing at this level is something that the whole club and the village looks forward to.”

There were nine tries to savour for Jones and his coaching team as they romped to victory, three of them coming from back row man Jarrad Llewellyn. Centre Cobi Green and replacement forward Liam Wiggins both scored two tries, while McCauley Rowley and Callum Phillips completed the try scoring. Rhys Trulove converted six of the tries.

Ystalyfera ended a five-match losing streak in all competitions by beating Narberth 21-19 at home. It was the first taste of victory since 24 September.

Scrum half Zac Beynon, wing Callum Tomsa and flanker Ben Williams scored the tries, and outside half Sam Comley converted all three. The home side led 14-12 at the break, with Lewis Gibby and Josh Davies scoring tries for the Otters, one of which Nick Gale converted.

In the second half, Josh Evans scored a third try for the visitors which Gale once again improved. Narberth could have won it at the death, but George McDonald was denied a try after crossing the line because of a forward pass.

Trebanos picked up only their second win of the campaign as they held on to beat Glamorgan Wanderers, 16-11. Three first half penalties from Rhys Harris kept the home side a point ahead of their visitors, who struck first with a try from Will Adams-Jones and then added a penalty from Aled Evans.

Evans kicked his side into the lead, 11-9, with his second penalty early in the second half, but a yellow card to skipper captain Max Wootton put them under pressure and Trebanos hit back to grab the try that Harris converted to win the game.

Centre Kris Jenkins was the hero for Maesteg Quins as he thundered over from a neat back line move off a solid scrum five metres out from the Beddau line to steer his side to a 21-17 home win. It was a god comeback from the home side who found themselves trailing 17-7 in the second half.
