Roderick-Evans went into the game needing 13 points to overtake another Welshman, former Leeds Beckett University scrum half and captain Connor Lloyd. He helped himself to 14 in the end with four penalties and a conversion to move up to 296.
There were also tries on a filthy night for wing Jake Morgan with a brilliant solo effort and Tyler Olding. Ethan Morgan added a late penalty to complete a 27-13 win over last season’s league champions.
“You don’t win the league without being a good side and they were a big, strong and mature side. Even so, I think we had the edge on them,” said Cardiff Met head coach Ian Gardner.
“We wore them down at the scrum in the first half and the bench we had was strong to keep us on top in the area. We earned some significant penalties from the scrum.
“I’m delighted that Bradley was able to break the record – he lines them up and kicks them over. Let’s hope he can add significantly to his record over the rest of the season.”
The game at Cyncoed also saw new recruit Benji Williams get his first taste of BUCS action off the bench having recovered from a shoulder operation six months ago. The Wales U20 back and second row man looks all set to add to the carrying power of the side as he gets back up to full speed.
There was no joy for Cardiff University in their top-of-table clash with Loughborough. They were without five front line forwards and went on to concede three driving maul tries as their hosts won 31-10 to move two points clear of the rest.
Wing Rhydian Williams scored the first of two tries for Cardiff and it was still anyone’s game moving into the final quarter with Loughborough only leading 16-10. But a yellow card and the power of the home side’s driving line-out earned them the victory.
However, Cardiff’s director of rugby Alan Flowers will know that with his top team out he should be able to close the gap and cause even more problems for the current table-toppers.
At the other end off the table, Swansea University were beaten 31-16 at St Helen’s by reigning champions Exeter University.
