Cardiff & Vale College ready to clinch ‘double double’

Lucas De La Rua on the charge for CAVC against Sir Gar

Cardiff & Vale College will have two targets in mind when they head to Parc Y Scarlets for the final of the Welsh Schools & Colleges Cup on Wednesday, 7 December (kick-off 7.30pm – watch live on Rygbi Pawb on www.s4c.cymru/clic).

First and foremost, they will want to defend the title they won for the first time at Principality Stadium last year when they overcame Llandovery College. Then there will be the small matter of evening the score with Coleg Sir Gar, who were the only team to beat them in the regular league season.

“We set out at the start of the season wanting to become league champions once again. The defeat to Sir Gar at home was a lesson for us, but we managed to overtake them at the top of the table in the last round of matches,” said CAVC director of rugby, Martyn Fowler.

“Now we’ve got the chance to not only settle a score with them, but also to keep hold of the trophy we won last year. To become double, double winners in the league and cup would be a great achievement for this group of players.”

It took a 50-18 win over local rivals Whitchurch HS in the last round of matches to get the champions to the top of the table. Sir Gar went to Coleg Y Cymoedd with a weakened team and went down 54-14, thus finishing second overall by two points.

CAVC ran in seven tries at Whitchurch with Wales U18 back row star Lucas de la Rua leading the way with two. There was also a try for highly rated hooker Saul Hurley and his individual battle with Sir Gar’s skipper Harry Thomas.

The switch of venue to Parc Y Scarlets will give a home feel to the fixture for Sir Gar and director of rugby Euros Evans knows that nothing less than their very best performance of the season will suffice if they are to win the title for a record fifth time.

“We haven’t been in the final for a few years, so it’s great to be back with a shot at winning the title again. The boys are really up for it and know how tough it is going to be,” said Evans.

“CAVC have proved themselves to be worthy champions from last year by topping the table and reaching the final for the second year in a row. It was a really close contest when we went up to them in October and won 26-25.

“We know we’ve got to keep a very close eye on some of their big game players, but this is what the players have been working hard towards all season.”
