Jones kicked 13 points to end the eight match unbeaten run in the league by the Blue & Blacks this season. The Wizards No 10 also helped to end his side’s four-match losing streak in all competitions to get their season back on track.

The Wizards moved to second place in the table, behind Cardiff, in the pick of this week’s game as all the clubs return to domestic league action after Premiership Cup action last weekend.

Fly-half Jones and his opposite number, Dan Fish, swapped penalties in a tight first-half before Aberavon scored the game’s first try by wing Jay Baker, converted by Jones, to make it 13-6 at half-time.

Cardiff conjured up two tries of their own in the second half, from the impressive Fish and flanker Alex Mann, to make it 20-16 to the visitors. Then home full back Jonathan Phillips edged Aberavon into a three point lead lead with a try that Jones improved.

Cardiff replacement Harrison James replied with a penalty to make 23-23 midway through the second-half before the game was turned by a decision of referee Ben Whitehouse to award the Wizards a penalty try.

Alun Rees had only just come onto the pitch when he tackled opposite number Ieuan Davies in an offside position as he drove for the line around the front of a five metre line out maul. The officials agreed a try would have been scored and Rees also picked up a yellow card.

The rest of the clubs in the Indigo Premiership now know what they have to do as the league campaign resumes this weekend. Llandovery will be determined to build on their impressive win over Cardiff in the Premiership Cup as they travel to face Swansea.

The Drovers are third in the league, having won seven of their eight games so far this season. Meanhwhile, fourth placed Merthyr welcome resurgent Newport to The Wern and will be determined to secure their sixth league win.

Pontypridd face Jason Strange’s Ebbw Vale at Sardis Road looking to kick-start their season after a largely disappointing campaign so far. The Steelmen are fifth in the table and will want a win to keep them in touch with the play-off positions.

Ponty suffered a disappointing defeat to Newport in their previous league game and will be looking to rediscover their impressive early season form. They were boosted last week by winning at Aberavon to reach the semi-finals of the Premiership Cup.

RGC face second from bottom Carmarthen Quins at home and will be looking to build on their last impressive home win against Aberavon to push themselves further up the table. They are also through too the final four in the cup.

Bottom of the table Bridgend host Llanelli at the Brewery Field, looking for a second win of their league season after a difficult start to the season.
