Aberavon coach, Jason Hyatt, is looking for his side to keep their momentum in the Indigo Group Premiership when they face bottom of the table, Bridgend, on Boxing Day.

The Wizards became the first side to beat Indigo Premiership leaders Cardiff this season but their last fixture against fellow top of the table side, Llandovery, was called off due to a frozen pitch.

Aberavon, who are second in the table, travel to face a Ravens outfit at the Brewery Field. Bridgend are rooted to the bottom of the table, having only one of their seven league games this season.

“We will have some players back from injury to boost the squad and available for selection and we really want to keep the momentum going now,” said Hyatt.

“Having the Llandovery game postponed has broken that a bit but nearly all of the games were off that weekend, so we just need to re-focus because we had a good win and scored 30 points against Cardiff in our last game.

“Bridgend is a local derby and we have two local derbies with Swansea after this game and it’s all part of the festive season and we haven’t really been able to that because of Covid.

“This is the first time we can really get back to the tradition of these games and we are all really looking forward to enjoying the derbies over this period.

“We know what Bridgend are capable of and we have seen in this league already that any side can beat any side on their day. So we won’t be reading too much into where Bridgend are in the table because we know what to expect.

“We showed what we can do against Cardiff and our defence and our set-piece were excellent and we need to do more of the same against Bridgend.

“We need to focus on ourselves and what we want to do. We are getting to the midway part of the season and we want to be in the play-off places come the end of the league campaign.

“It doesn’t matter if you are first or fourth, you just have to qualify for the play-offs and that is what we intend to do.”

Cardiff were the only side to play last weekend, with all the other Premiership games postponed due to frozen pitches. The Blue and Blacks took full advantage and recorded an 82-0 demolition against a hapless Carmarthen Quins side at the Arms Park.

Cardiff host Pontypridd at the Arms Park and will be looking to continue their unbeaten record at home. Ponty are at the wrong end of the table with only two wins in the league so far this season.

Carmarthen Quins travel to face Llandovery looking to restore some pride after the Cardiff result against another side that has turned their home patch into a real fortress this season.

Swansea welcome West Wales rivals Llanelli to St Helen’s in a mid-table clash with both teams needing to find some form and wins if they are to make a challenge for a play-off place.

Ebbw Vale, who are in fourth place in the league with six wins in the league, host a Newport side in mid-table in the Gwent derby at Eugene Cross Park over the festive period.
