The Ironmen were well worth their win to make it seven wins and now sit fifth in the table just outside the all-important top four, which guarantees a play-off place at the end of the regular season. Defeat for the Drovers thwarter their hopes of moving into second place and cutting the gap on table-topping Cardiff.
Rowland Phillips, the Merthyr, coach would have been delighted to see his side come away with the win from Church Bank which has become a fortress for the home side.
The Drovers are still in third place and this defeat will be a major disappointment for a team that still has ambitions for a play-off place and that has enjoyed an impressive campaign, especially on their home patch.
Phillips’ side were always in control of this game played in terrible conditions and went in 14-3 head at half-time, a lead they would not surrender to the home side.
Merthyr’s tries were scored by wingers Adam Hoskins and Teri Gee, captain Craig Locke and included a penalty try, with fly-half Kristian Jones crossing for the home side.
Llandovery replacement Ioan Hughes was shown red for a high tackle in the second half but the Ironmen were well in control when they home side went down to 14-men.
