Students win sole surviving Championship match

Cardiff Met have been able to move into sixth position, beating Tata Steel 36-20 in the only game left standing in the Championship due to the icy conditions seen across the country this weekend.

The cold weather had forced the two other games in the Championship to be postponed, while all four quarter final matches in the Championship Cup also fell foul of the ice, giving Cardiff Met the chance to press their advantage in the league.

It was a welcome return to winning ways for the Archers, as they continued to fight back following a difficult mid-season period, where they lost five games on the bounce in league action.

Danny Milton’s side has now won two of their last three games, with their only recent loss coming against league leaders Pontypool, losing 27-7 in a tight contest at Pontypool Park in their previous game.

Meanwhile Tata Steel continued their struggle in the league competition, as they fell to their ninth loss in nine games so far this season and continue to sit at the bottom of the table.

The Archers got off the blocks quickly when former Wales under 20s and Ospreys Academy player Benji Williams showed his strength to score early on. Tom Cotton added two superb tries, as Cardiff Met’s attacking maul began to function nicely.

Tata were soon back in the game following two close range tries from flanker Regan Smith and number eight Joe Callery, after some patient work deep in the Archers’ territory. Cameron Bamford added 10 points from the kicking tee, as the visitors looked to stay within range of the students.

But it was Cardiff Met who forced the issue late on, as second half tries from flanker Ardal Yallop, replacement hooker Ollie Jeffrey and prop Luc Williamson kept the Archers ahead. Haydn Lidstone and Ali Stacey added three conversions between them, as Cardiff Met emerged with an important bonus point victory at home.

It was a good run out for a number of players ahead of the return of BUCS Super Rugby this week. The Archers head to the home of reigning champions Exeter University on Wednesday at a venue that saw them knocked out in a gripping semi-final last year.

The weather wiped-out all four WRU Championship Cup quarter-finals as well as two other league fixtures.
