Ponty’s woes continue

Dale Stuckey

Pontypridd have had a disappointing season in the Indigo Prem

It was nip and tuck all the way with both teams virtually running themselves to a standstill by the final quarter. Dale Stuckey’s 62nd minute penalty brought the gallant home side to within three points of their visitors, yet there were no more points scored after that.

Pontypridd’s woes continued as they found themselves edged out 32-35 at Sardis Road by an RGC side that took home the spoils with victory in a game in which the lead changed hands no fewer than 10 times.

Home skipper Kris Parker turned down a shot at goal at the death that could have drawn the game and instead kicked to the corner to go for the win.

“It’s very disappointing and it’s a tough defeat to take. With nothing on the game we decided to try to give the fans a win at the end, but a bit of inaccuracy at the line-out and then a turnover cost us,” said Parker.

“We stuck at it, but we gifted them 21 points. We’ve put a bit pf pride back int he jersey and that’s what we need moving forward.”

It was a 17th league defeat of the season for Ponty and they are now only one off the bottom of the table, while the Gogs are confirmed in seventh place with one game to play.

RGC scrum half Efan Jones was the star of the show with a hat-trick of tires and his half-back partner Dion Jones wasn’t far behind with his haul of 20 points in the match

The visitors led 24-19 at the break with all their points coming from the Jones boys – two tries to Efan, one to Dion and a further nine points from the cultured boot of Dion

But when Tommy Morgan crossed for Ponty’s second try early in the second half – scrum half Joel Raikes pounced for the first in the opening half – and Stuckey added the conversion, it made it 26-24 to the home side.

There was then a penalty apiece for Jones and Stuckey before Efan Jones struck for a third time to clinch the bonus-point for the visitors. Jones and Stuckey then swapped two more penalties to compelte the scoring
