Johnson, who is part of the Dragons’ youth set up, crossed the line three times for her side, with added tries from Sadie Jones, Lily Hawkins and Kayde Kerby securing the win.
They had to survive a spell being two players down through sin-bin, with Ffion Davies, Georgia Smith and Erin Hallows sending Ysgol Bro Teifi into the break with a 17-15 lead.
Idris Davies got off to a flying start through Sadie Jones barging her way over the try line from the first play of the game. The Tredegar school soon doubled their lead as star player Katie Johnson crossed to score after neat build up play.
This sparked Bro Teifi into life, and they got their first points on the board as Ffion Davies evaded a tackle to score in the corner. However, almost immediately, Johnson struck again to restore her school’s 10 point advantage.
Idris Davies’ discipline then derailed their confident start, as Hollie Barry was sin-binned for a high tackle before being swiftly followed by Lily Hawkins for an offside. Their opponents took full advantage of the extra two players to score 12 points.
First, Georgia Smith bundled over before an opportunistic Erin Hallows crossed after stealing the ball from a ruck to snatch a 17-15 lead heading into the interval. However, it just took a matter of minutes for Idris Davies to regain their lead in the second half, with Johnson completing her hat-trick.
With a full squad on the pitch, Idris Davies showed their class to extend their lead to 27-17 after a charge down try by Lily Hawkins. They then sealed the victory late on with fly-half Kayde Kerby’s try.
Esylit Jones crossed late on for Bro Teifi, but it was little more than a consolation for the West Wales side.
WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY… Idris Davies School head coach Matthew Jones
“I’m just really pleased for the girls. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for them. We have some of them who have won things at club level but this is the first for them in school competition.“Katie [Johnson] is incredible. She’s the hardest working player and pupil you will come across. She deserves everything that she did today.”
WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY… Ysgol Bro Teifi head coach Huw James
“It’s the second time we have played here having won here last year at U14 but it is still amazing for the girls to have the opportunity to play at this great venue.“On a different day, a couple of bounces might have gone our way and it would have been a different story but credit to Idris Davies.”
