Sharp shooting quartet excel in Indigo Prem

Indigo Prem

Lloyd Lewis (Newport), Rhys Jones (Swansea) and Joe Westwood (Newport) were among the top performers from round one

Deadly accuracy from the kicking tee was the standout featue of the opening round of the Indigo Premiership with the leading four goal-kickers not missing a single shot at the sticks between them.

Bridgend’s Luke Price secured a personal haul of 23 points against Swansea in a game of fluctuating fortunes. He is some considerable distance ahead on the points table after one round of action of Pontypool’s Matthew Jarvis and Swansea’s Rhys Jones who accumulated 12 points apiece, just one ahead of Carmarthen Quins’ Jac Wilson. The astonishing thing is that between them they amassed 58 points on the opening weekend of action and not a single player missed a shot at goal.

With hard and fast tracks across the league, four players took advantage of the firm pitches to scorch over for a brace of tries. Newport duo Joe Westwood and Lloyd Lewis both went over for a brace as did Llandovery winger Harry Doel and Aberavon finisher Frankie Jones.

Jones and Doel both enjoyed themselves in the sunshine, as they both made three line-breaks. Young Pontypool winger Huw Anderson gave an eye catching performance against Newport to also make three line-breaks and he also features on the most defenders beaten with five alongside Bridgend’s Caine Woolerton and Llandovery’s Jac Davies. Doel (7) and Jones (6) lead the way in what looks like a competitive section.

While there are plenty of new names featuring on the various sections, there are still some familiar names making their presence felt.

Cardiff talisman Morgan Allen is beginning the season the way he finished the last one – by going in hard!

He made 15 carries for the Blue & Blacks and looked like a man possessed at times at Sardis Road. New kid on the block Ben Moa is his nearest challenger with 14 carries and the young back row made an impressive Premiership Pontypool debut and looks one to watch.

Carmarthen Quins’ No 8 Lewys Millin featured regularly last season and he follows his Cardiff counterpart’s example by setting the example for others to follow when it comes to the ‘post tackle’ category.

In a beaten side, he still managed to make nine positive actions where he made a tackle before performing a turnover action against the Drovers.

On the defensive side of the game, Pontypridd’s Cai James (17) made more tackles than any other player. In a stalemate against Cardiff, young prop Theo Bevacqua made an impressive 14 tackles to be second in the rankings, just one ahead of his clubmate Craig Hudd.

Ponty’s Tom Harper also had a good day at the office, making six counter ruck attempts to spoil Cardiff’s party.
