Up for grabs are the 118-year-old Dewar Shield, this season being played at U16 rather than U15 level, the Welsh Schools U18 women’s cup and the most prestigious trophy for men’s rugby at U18 level, the WSC Rugby cup.
The action kicks-off at 3.00pm when Mynydd Mawr & Dinefwr, in their first final in 74 years, take on Bridgend & District Schools in the Dewar Shield. Former Wales and British & Irish Lions scrum half Gareth Cooper will be watching his son Louis don the No 9 shirt in that game.
Bridgend’s last win came in 1990 when one of their star players was future Wales No 8 Nathan Thomas. He will be back at Principality Stadium as director of Llandovery College, who will face Ysgol Glantaf in the WSC Rugby U18 final.
That is going to be an historic contest given that whoever wins will become the first school side to lift the title. Llandovery reached the final two years ago, but were beaten by Cardiff & Vale College, and only managed to beat Glantaf by three points when the two sides met in their Conference A league fixture.
Glantaf are keen to set the record straight and in 15-year-old No 8 Tom Howe have a star in the making. Just handed a three-year contract offer by the academy at Cardiff Rugby, he scored a hat-trick of tries in the stunning semi-final win over four-time champions Coleg Sir Gar.
Outside Lloyd Lucas starred for the Cardiff Schools U15 side when they won the Dewar Shield two years ago and in half-back partner Sion Davies has a scrum half in the Mike Phillips mould. There are five players in the side involved in the Wales U18 training group.
Llandovery also have a rising talent in outside half Carwyn Leggatt-Jones, who has just turned 16, and is already in the extended Scarlets academy. Prop Yestyn Cook is an Exile who is already on the books with the Scarlets, while back row man Joe Denman, from Cardiff, leads the side.
The Welsh Schools U18 women’s final is a repeat of last year, with Llandovery College looking to improve on their 17-0 defeat by Coleg Gwent last year.
