“It’s always going to be tough coming away to Trebanos,” said Narberth forwards player coach Ricky Guest. “They’re a proud bunch, who are well-drilled, well coached and who have quality and will fight for everything.
“In this league anyone can beat anyone on any given day, so it was pleasing to come with a five-point victory on the road. Conditions weren’t great, but I thought the boys stuck at it and to score the fifth try in the 79th minute with good offloading shows that we can play right until the end.”
First half tries from wings Dean James and Rhys Harries gave Narberth a 10-6 lead over two penalties for Trebanos by outside half Rhys Harris. Full back Ashley Sutton and locks Alex Jenkins and Will Blackburn added second half tries, along with James.
Llangennech were the big winners in the division, racking up 11 tries in a thumping 77-5 win over Crymych. Jordan Saunders and Joseph Hutchings scored twice with Finley Evans, Tom H Davies, Callum Jenkins, Tom M Davies, Craig Thomas, Luke Davies and Steff Marshall also going over, while Marshall converted all 11 for a 27-point match haul.
Elsewhere, a hat-trick for scrum-half Gareth Andrew inspired Bonymaen in their 39-12 victory at Ystalyfera. Cameron Setter and Luke Darnell were their other try scorers.
Dunvant edged out Ammanford 43-37 while in the battle of the basement boys, Maesteg Quins recorded a narrow 21-19 win at Tata Steel.
Championship East leaders Ystrad Rhondda returned to action and got back to winning ways by seeing off Treorchy 33-6 at Gelligaled Park. Captain Jarrad Llewellyn in the back row and hooker Corben Evans helped themselves to two tries apiece for the table toppers, who were also awarded a penalty try, and outside half Rhys Truelove kicked three conversions.
Those efforts secured Ystrad a ninth league win of the campaign from 11 games and saw them bounce back from defeat at Bedwas a fortnight ago.
Cardiff Met moved up into second place after they hit Glamorgan Wanderers for six in a 36-17 home win. Max Surry was at the double with Chris Johnson, Connor Chapman, Zak Roberts and Osian Hill also on the scoresheet. Ross McKay kicked three conversions.
Met are nine points back on leaders Ystrad Rhondda but do have two games in hand – and are the only other side to beat Ystrad this season, winning there 39-32 back in October.
Bargoed drop from second to third after their scheduled clash at Rumney was postponed, while waterlogged pitches also claimed Cross Keys’ game against Newbridge and the match between St Peter’s and Penallta.
Bargoed host Ystrad Rhondda next weekend while Cardiff Met are at Bedwas – who won 31-10 at Beddau. Jak Robbins, Dale Rogers, Hamish Anderson and Aaron Billingham secured maximum points for Bedwas. James Dixon converted all four tries and kicked a penalty.
