Bargoed and Llangennech star in Championship

Powerhouse No 8 Tom Rice scored twice for Bargoed in their big win over Ystrad Rhondda

The Bulls 52-15 triumph was built on their powerful set piece, with two penalty tries flowing from their masterly front five. The first came from a scrum and the second from a driving line-out.

Bargoed cut the gap at the top of the Admiral Champions East to a mere five points with a blistering, eight try performance against league leaders Ystrad Rhondda.

To their credit Ystrad hit back with three tries of their own but couldn’t get a fourth to at least take home a bonus-point. Instead, they had to watch home No 8 Tom Rice power over for the first and last scores with Lewis Roby, skipper James Leadbetter, Callum Jones and Dai Evans joining in the try-fest.

The rest of the points were provided by the boot of Josh Prosser. With two games in hand over Ystrad, Bargoed are now well placed to take over at the top and push for promotion.

Third placed Cardiff Met were beaten on the road at Bedwas, 21-15 and by two tries to one. That was a fourth win in a row for the ‘Was, who had tries from Aaron Billingham and Lewis Bowden, as well as 11 points from the boot of James Dixon.

Cross Keys moved up to fourth on the back of their 29-22 triumph at Treorchy, while Beddau stunned Newbridge at the Welfare Ground, winning 18-12. It was 10-7 to the visitors at the break thanks to a try from No 8 Lewis Jones and a conversion and penalty from scrum half Call Smith.

Newbridge had tries from centre Josh Smith and wing Sam Watkins, with the latter adding a conversion. In the second half, Beddau picked up another try from wing Tom Edwards and had a drop goal from Call Smith.

In the West, Llangennech became the first team to beat Brecon this season as they went to Parc de Pugh and won 26-15. A dominant first half display laid the foundation for a victory that included tries from Thomas M Davies, Tom H Davies and Ryan Morgans.

There was also a penalty try as well as two conversions from Steff Marshall. The full set of five points enabled Llangennech to overtake Brecon in second place behind Narberth, who hammered Tata Steel 76-7, scoring 57 points without reply in the second half.

Bonymaen had tries from Cameron Setter and Scott Clancy, as well as a penalty from Lawrence Thomas to thank for their 13-3 home win over Trebanos
