The midweek win at Cyncoed avenged the 25-20 defeat against Bath at The Recreation Ground in similarly atrocious conditions, with skipper Ewan Guy coming up with the matchwinning try in the last play of the game.
It couldn’t have been a more dramatic ending to an epic contest with the Archers going through three scrum penalties within 10 metres of the Bath line before finally cracking the defensive line with a tap penalty to turn a 12-8 deficit into a 15-10 victory.
“There is a lot to be proud of at the club and the players have been displaying huge character,” said Met director of rugby Danny Milton
A last gasp try from Guy had earned Met a first win over Durham University in seven years the pervious week and Toby Baldwin was the matchwinner at the death with a 33-31 Championship victory over Beddau.
With five games left to play in the regular season in BUCS Super Rugby, Milton’s men are still on course to take a top four finish and qualify for a home quarter final. They have three games to play at home with bottom of the table Nottingham next up on Wednesday, 7 February.
Second placed Hartpury are the visitors to Cyncoed a week later, with a trip to champions Exeter after that. They complete their campaign with a home game against Leeds Beckett and an away trip to Loughborough.
In the Championship East, they are now ahead of Ystrad Rhondda on points difference, with a game in hand, and take on winless Treorchy on Friday night. Bargoed, in third, are six points behind with two games in hand.
The Archers were able to move to the top of the table thanks to tries from Gus Patterson, Mike Hansen and Zak Roberts. Osian Hill and Gus Patterson added a conversion each.
