sgol Bro Dinefwr celebrate winning

Bro Dinefwr picked up another title at Principality Stadium as their U16 team ran in seven tries in a 43-10 triumph over north Walians Ysgol Godre’r Berwyn in the Girls Schools U16 Cup final at #RTP24.

It was skipper and No 8 Erin Jones who led by example as she grabbed two tries and drove her team on throughout a highly competitive clash.

The west Wales school arrived with no fewer than nine of the side that had won the U14 title last year with a 28-12 triumph over Bryn Celynnog and got their noses in front with two early tries.

Godre’r Berwyn were guilty of not making the most of their chances in the first half and quickly found themselves falling behind like their two fellow teams in the earlier U12 and U14 finals.

The experience of last year helped to settle the nerves in the Bro Dinefwr side and it was prop Elin Jones who powered over from close range to get the scoreboard moving. Gwen Williams, one of the survivors from a year ago, added the extras and then improved another great breakaway try from centre Beatrice Morgan.

A year earlier she had plundered a hat-trick of tires in the final and this time she went on an outside arc to find a way through the defence before sprinting to the posts from half-way. At that stage it looked as though it was going to be an uneven contest, but Godre’r Berwyn had other ideas.

Five minutes before the break scrum half Moli Jones weaved her way over from close range after a great attack down the left looked to be heading for an overlap score. Bro Dinefwr defended that attack but couldn’t stop Jones.

If that lifted the spirits of the Gogs, they were hit with a third try on the stroke of half-time when prop Kayleigh Simcox barreled her way over for another scorer that Williams converted to make it 21-5 at the break.

The north Walians needed to be the first to score in the second half and that’s exactly what they did as they turned significant pressure into much needed points to cut the gap to 11 points. At that stage it was still anyone’s game in a contest that was full of big hits, great endeavor and plenty of skill.

But for the third time in the day the brave efforts of the Godre’r Berwyn players weren’t enough to stem the tide and Bro Dinefwr finished with a flourish as speedy wing Poppy Jones and Go.Compare player of the match Erin Jones, twice, and Moran again rounded things off with further tries.
