Edwards double steers Ysgol Bro Teifi to ‘local derby’ win at #RTP24

Ysgol Bro Teifi celebrate their victory over local rivals Ysgol Bro Pedr

It was a case of first time lucky for Ysgol Bro Teifi as they ended an epic trek around Wales with a local derby at Principality Stadium to beat Ysgol Bro Pedr 29-7 to lift the Welsh Schools Senior Group Men’s U18 Plate.

Bro Teifi had never entered the tournament before and had to travel out of their Ceredigion base to in two of the earlier rounds to stay on course for a place in the #RTP24 finals.

A brace of tries from outside centre Tomos Edwards, who picked up the Go.Compare Player of the Match award, helped them win what tuned into a Teifiside derby against a school from 10 miles down the road.

Most of the points were scored in the first half as Bro Teifi ran in four first half tries. Edwards’ brace came after tries from second row Guto Dafis and inside centre Osian Taylor.

There was a dramatic start for Bro Teifi as they notched their opening try in the first minute when Dafis charged down a clearance kick before touching down to score. Skipper Lloyd Evans added the conversion.

Evans was on target again when Bro Teifi extended their lead with a try from inside centre Osian Taylor, who used his power to crash over from short range. Try number three followed for the Llandysul-based school when the outstanding Edwards intercepted near half-way and ran in unopposed to score at the posts.

Evans’ third successful conversion made it 21-0. Things got even worse for Bro Pedr when Edwards grabbed his second try to make it 26-0.

That was the cue for Bro Pedr to hit back and they finally got something to celebrate in when captain Steffan Evans powered over from short range to notch a try that full back Osian Roberts nailed to cut the gap to 19 points at the break.

Bro Pedr loosehead prop Jorge Martin was shown a yellow card at the start of the second half for foul play and that allowed Evans to add three more points to the Bro Teifi tally.

That made it four out of five off the tee for Evans but his compass went awry with a long-range penalty with his final shot at goal. That single penalty was the only score of a highly competitive second half and meant it was Evans who picked up the trophy to end his schoolboy playing career on the highest of highs.
