The Easterby’s are back hunting more silverware

Simon and Ffredi Easterby at #RTP22

Last weekend he was the defence coach for Ireland as they secured back-to-back Six Nations titles in Dublin, but on Day 3 of #RTP24 in Cardiff Simon Easterby will be on ‘Dad duty’ as the water carrier for the Ysgol Bro Morgannwg U15 team in the Welsh Schools Intermediate Group Year 10 final.

Bro Morgannwg will be led by his son Ffredi, who will be hoping to add the Year 8 title his side won two years ago at the home of Welsh rugby when they meet Haverfordwest High in the Year 10 final.

The British & Irish Lion Test flanker, who captained Ireland, Llanelli and the Scarlets during an illustrious playing career, celebrated Six Nations championship glory when the men in green beat Scotland in Dublin last weekend.

Thursday, 21 March – Welsh Schools Junior Group & Welsh Schools Intermediate Finals
U11 DC Thomas Bowl Final: Swansea Valley v Mynydd Mawr/Dinefwr (10.00am)
U11 DC Thomas Plate Final: Newport v Vale of Glamorgan (11.30am)
U11 DC Thomas Cup Final: Bridgend v Pontypool (1.00pm)
Year 9 Cup Final: Bro Myrddin v Y Pant (3.00pm)
Year 10 Cup Final: Haverfordwest v Bro Morgannwg (5.00pm)

But his return to Principality Stadium, when he won once with Ireland and helped Llanelli win the Principality Cup in 2003, will be far more personal this week. Back in 2022, he admitted he was “more nervous than on most international days” after Ffredi had inspired his side to a 31-19 triumph over Penweddig.

The Year 10 clash is the last of five more finals on Day 3 of #RTP24, which includes the prestigious U1 DC Thomas Cup matches. Many Wales stars, including Terry Holmes, Robert Jones, Neil Jenkins, Rob Howley, Gavin Henson and Michael Owen, had their first taste of the National and Millennium Stadiums in the final of the DC Thomas Cup and speak of its special place in their careers.

The DC Thomas finals are 12-a-side with Bridgend Schools facing Pontypool Schools in the Cup showdown. Bridgend scrum-half Max John is a cousin of Wales outside-half Sam Costelow, while his half-back Carter O’Driscoll is the son of Adam O’Driscoll, who played in the backrow for the Bridgend senior side. His uncle Zac is a former Bridgend captain.
